âïļ Welcome to the Arena!
ð What Are These Rankings?
The Historic Free Fencing Federation Rankings track your mastery across eight weapon disciplines! Every bout you fight, every exchange you win or lose, shapes your Fencer Mastery Score (FMS).
Think of it like your reputation in the guild â the more you fight and win, the higher your mastery climbs. Defeat skilled opponents? Your score soars! Face a tough loss? You'll learn and bounce back!
ðŊ The Fencer Mastery Score (FMS)
Your FMS starts at 0 (representing a baseline skill of 1200). As you fight, your score changes based on:
- Win against higher-ranked opponents? Big FMS gains! ð
- Win against lower-ranked opponents? Small FMS gains
- Lose to lower-ranked opponents? Larger FMS drops
- Lose to higher-ranked opponents? Small FMS drops (they were expected to win!)
ð§Ū The Math Behind The Magic
We use a battle-tested system called ELO rating (same math used in chess, esports, and competitive games worldwide!). Here's how it works:
Step 1: Predict the Outcome
Before each round, we calculate the expected probability of each fencer winning based on their current FMS difference.
If you have FMS +100 and opponent has FMS +50, you're expected to win ~57% of rounds
Step 2: Fight the Round!
The actual result: You win (1.0), you lose (0.0), or double loss (0.0 for both)
Note: A double loss means both fencers lose the round (both get 0.0). It's not a penalty - it's simply that neither fencer won that exchange.
Step 3: Update Your FMS
Your FMS changes based on whether you performed better or worse than expected!
- You (FMS +50) vs Opponent (FMS +150)
- Expected: You have ~36% chance to win
- You WIN the round! (Upset victory!)
- FMS Change: 16 Ã (1.0 - 0.36) = +10 FMS! ð
ð What This Means For You
- Beat stronger opponents: Massive FMS gains!
- Defend your rank: Win expected matches to climb steadily
- Learn from losses: Small FMS drops when losing to better fencers
- Every round counts: Even in a losing match, winning rounds helps your score!
ð Confidence Score
Not all FMS ratings are equally reliable! The Confidence Score shows how much data supports your rating.
How Confidence Works
Confidence increases with the number of matches you've fought:
- 80-100% (Very High): 20+ matches - Your FMS is highly reliable!
- 60-79% (High): 10-19 matches - Good data, solid rating
- 40-59% (Medium): 5-9 matches - Getting there!
- 20-39% (Low): 2-4 matches - Early days, rating may shift
- 0-19% (Very Low): 0-1 matches - Not enough data yet
ð Hybrid Scoring System
This system uses a Hybrid Scoring approach that combines the best of both worlds:
FMS Change Formula
70% Round-Based Component
- FMS updates calculated for each round
- Rewards defensive skill (survivability)
- Differentiates quality of wins
- 5-0 win â 3-2 win
30% Match-Based Component
- Single FMS calculation for match outcome
- Win = 1.0, Draw = 0.5, Loss = 0.0
- Reduces extreme volatility
- Values overall match result
ð Example: Hybrid Calculation
Player A (FMS +50) defeats Player B (FMS +100) with a score of 3-2:
Match Result: +18 FMS (upset victory)
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Hybrid = (25 Ã 0.7) + (18 Ã 0.3)
= 17.5 + 5.4
= +22.9 FMS
